Day 2: Potatosack Pillowcase Dress

These pillowcase dresses have long been making the rounds of the internet and I've always thought they looked adorable...until I made one. Now I can't decide if it's" Retro Hobo Adorable" or just "Frumpy Toddler Chic"? It made me think about my grandpa and the stories about the girls of his day making themselves underwear from old flour sacks and ending up with "Heart's Delight" stamped on their backsides (because not all flour companies sold their flour in pretty calico printed bags). My grandmother hated those stories!
I used this Fat Quarter Pillowcase Dress Tutorial but didn't have any fat quarter bundles so I had fun using up some leftovers in my stash. I'm pretty sure long time readers will recognize the quilties some of these fabrics came from. And I have to say, Cupcake loved prancing around in it so much that I might make her another one. But I was kind of hoping this would be cute enough to put her in for going to Mass this summer (with a little shrug) and now... it kind of looks way too frumpy casual to me. What do you think?

(Not much caring for the side-tie/one-shoulder option, I was thrilled to find this back tie version!)

  2. It's adorable! I made a few from pillowcases for my daughter when she was five or six thinking they'd be perfect summertime dresses. They ended up being nightgowns. :-( But I've also made them with straps and, with a little eyelet added to those straps, they might be a little dressier for Mass. Although, I think she looks lovely just the way she is.

  3. Ooh, I think it's adorable! I definitely think it would be appropriate for Mass, especially if paired with a sweet little shrug!

  5. I think that it is a better play dress. My kids, especially my youngest girl tend to really get messy when playing. This would be nice to play in and not worry about getting stained.

  6. Adorable, Charlotte! Though, I agree that it's more suited as a play/casual wear dress. I really want to try and make one for A.
I have some super cute fat quarters just waiting for a project, too. Yay! :)

  9. When my daughter was a toddler, she would pull out the ribbon. I replaced it with foldover elastic in a pretty color (which looks like stretchy ribbon). So cute on little Cupcake! My cousin has been called Cuppy her whole life (short for Cupcake). I like for play or for Mass. Toddlers are happier when comfy.

  10. The prints are adorable, and so is your daughter in it! But I tend to agree with you, the pillowcase dresses always strike me as slightly frumpy. They're fine for a casual play dress on a hot summer day but I wouldn't do it for Mass. I have found some absolutely adorable girls' dress patterns online for free or cheap that have sleeves and look perfect for Mass. Btw I have never seen that back tie version and I agree it looks so much better than the side tie!
