This weekend, we decided to get a third bed for Cupcake and I got to try out my plans.
First, I picked out a pretty leaf trim and cut (three 17" strips and one longer 37.25" strip) and glued them to the three center slats and along the top rail. We decided on just the top and the slats and not all the way around because we didn't want it to look too fussy. Plus, we didn't want to have to worry about mitering any corners. (Read... lazy!)
Ignore ugly garage floor and drop cloth. |
Husband used liquid nails and tape to secure the trim while it set over night.
We wanted Cupcake's headboard to have a backing although the big girls say they'd like theirs open. I had the very helpful people at Lowe's cut this 1/4 plywood panel to 40" wide and it was supposed to be 20" long but their saw shorted out. We left it the size it was and just cut the notches at the bottom to make room for the bolts that attach the headboard to the rails.
When the glue was set, I painted everything including the rails and the footboard (not pictured) and we used some small nails to attach the back panel to the headboard.
Detail of the trim (painted)
And now we only have two more to go!
Cute! Well done! Did you link it to the Ikea Hack blog??
ReplyDeleteUm... I didn't know there was such a thing. I will have to go look for them now.

DeleteLove the way it turned out! All 4 of my kids are sleeping in the same room (their choice) - easy for me too, but I know these days are numbered.
ReplyDeleteThat turned out great! I'll have to keep that in mind when it's time for our little one to move to a big girl bed. I'm keeping her contained as long as we can!
ReplyDeleteLove it! (And I love that quilt, too!!)
ReplyDeleteso cute
ReplyDeleteThat is AWESOME! Looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! Love the DIY projects that actually work out.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty Charlotte! Love the blue and white contrast. Your wall color looks similar to my son's but I used a brown as an accent color. Am digging the white!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea they made molding like that. I love the room... Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love this fabulous idea! I'm 14 years old and redoing my small room on a tight budget, and I will definately do this! Considering that I'm also repainting some furniture white and this white, I save more money than buying a similar one at PBteen for $680!
ReplyDeleteYou just made my day. My daughter is still in her crib, and we're planning on skipping a toddler bed and going right to a small twin. Her room is TINY so we need a very small frame. I found this one at Ikea and it's the right size, but I wanted the headboard to have a back and I wanted to dress it up a little. This is so perfect. May I ask where you got the trim? And in what section of said store would I look?
