{p,h,f,r} Girls' Journal

{pretty}
Inspired by the many posts I've seen from Dawn over the years about her journals, the girls and I have been working on this one together. Using a Mary Engelbreit page a day calendar, we have been cutting and pasting in a sketchbook. Then we add some commentary sometimes about the picture, sometimes about the day. Not everyday, just when we feel inspired. Although our intention was just to have fun journalling together, I think it could be a great way for children to practice calendar skills. We don't always include the date printed on the calendar in our pastings so we just write it near the picture. You could easily ask your child to write the month, day of the week, date and year for a simple way to reinforce those skills. By trimming the calendar pages (and not always including the date) we can usually get two pictures on each page leaving room for comments but sometimes allow for a whole page on a special occasion like a birthday when we want to include birthday thoughts or greetings.

Don't be fooled. It might look like we started this project right at the beginning of the new year, but we didn't. We just jumped in and back tracked but who says a journal can't start whenever you want it to?

  2. I remember back to our homeschooling days (my homeschooling days) and my sisters and I would cut up pretty pictures from magazines...we had notebooks full of em. Kinda fun I think, good memories.

  4. I love your idea, and I love Mary Engelbreit. And, I love.her.fashions! Do you sew? It would be fun to try and re-create some of them! What is it about the fashions you see in illustrations? The feminine, flowiness of them is a big part of it, I think.
