I love Auntie Leila! She is the kind of lady I would love to spend a day in the kitchen with (her kitchen, of course)! I read her post about patching jeans and seriously sat in in wonder. Why have I never thought of that? What useless bit of trivia from a 3rd grade cootie catcher is hogging the brain cells I could have used to think of patching jeans. I am no professional seamstress but I can sew and it never even occurred to me to try to patch holey jeans... why not?
Then I pulled out my mending pile, which just so happened to have two holey pairs of girlie jeans. And a light bulb turned on. It was a quick one too, not just one of those new twirly ones that takes a few minutes to warm up.
And then I re-read her post... DING DING DING!!! I don't patch jeans because turning them into shorts, is the way we do it around here for boys and girls alike.
And sometimes, we get a little funky with them!
I was (and am) in awe of your sewing. Yet, what to do for boys' jeans? 'Cause I think those patches might look a little geeky on a guy...
ReplyDeleteI don't know what Auntie Leila would say, maybe camouflage patches? I have always turned our jeans into shorts if the waist and crotch still fits. That's why I've never even thought about patching.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this, Charlotte! I read the patching tutorial and am thankful. Finally, someone suggests opening up the side seam. I've always been afraid to do that. Patching up jeans without that trick is almost impossible. At best you only get a very ugly zigzag stitch over the patched jeans. And per Margaret's question, I have picked up some very boyish sports-embroidered patches for my little boys. I think patches for older boys might be tough to pull off. It's even a bit hard for my older girls. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI happy to introduce you to Auntie Leila's wisdom! Opening the side seam is such a brilliant idea. Almost makes me wish my kids needed patched jeans. Unfortunately, they need the shorts more! We are supposed to be in the 80's this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love her too! And i like the ribbon idea.
ReplyDelete80's...sheesh! You do need the shorts more. Since we just received another load of snow and because March is our snowiest month, we need the jeans desperately. And, BTW, opening up the side seam only works with certain types of jeans. I started on another pair this afternoon only to find that I have a triple seam on one side of the leg and a double seam on the other.:( So that pair will be made into shorts. Rats! Enjoy your weather.:)
